My work reflects a feeling for particular places I have gotten to know in my life. When I experience a landscape, my thoughts go to those who lived here before. I think about what I see would have looked like before the intense settlement of more recent centuries.
I think about the strength of the people whose lives did not depend on modern conveniences, but relied on knowledge, resilience and a closer connection with their natural surroundings and the other living creatures and plants that made their habitats close by.
Galiano has been in my life now for 15 years, and before that, summer vacations on Saturna. I also have connections to the Whistler area, having lived there 40 plus years ago, and been in the mountains since childhood. There was also lot of travel: in BC, up and down the coast and western mountains of North America in my childhood, due to my immigrant Dad wanting to see everything in the landscape. My parents’ wonder at the wild spaces communicated itself to me. My Dad’s interest in weather and his explanations awakened an interest in skies and clouds.
Landscape and light are my muses.
